Difference between Wi-Fi and Broadband

Must read

Oftentimes, when talking about the internet, we hear the terms broadband and Wi-Fi. At that point, you probably think, “Aren’t they the same thing?” Well, the answer is no. They are not the same thing and here, we will tell you how they are different.

What is broadband?

If we were to explain this in a very simple form, it would be like this: If the internet is a bunch of different countries, broadband is the plane. It is the connection to the internet that you use. It is of many types like DSL, Fiber Optic, Cable, Satellite, and many more. It is the type of internet connection that has the highest access speeds and that is why it is very popular.

How does it work?

Depending on the type of broadband, it uses copper or fiber and runs to your home. From there, it runs back thousands to millions of miles and connect their way to different parts of the internet. These cables or fibers also run under the sea and they have special boats to install them. From your end, they’ll be connected to your modem, and then to your router with wires. You can then use ethernet cables to connect to the internet by connecting to the router. This is called a hard-wired connection and is also the most stable and reliable connection. But this will limit your movement. Another way to connect to the router is a wireless connection and it requires a password to connect. We’ll get back to this in a while.

What is bandwidth?

Another concept that falls under broadband is bandwidth. Bandwidth differs from person to person. We can refer to bandwidth as the number of seats on the plane. Not every plane needs to have the same number of seats. For example, a fighter jet plane and a commercial plane are two very different planes. One has the capacity for 2 people and the other has the capacity for around 500. In this way, you and your neighbor don’t necessarily have to have the same bandwidth. The bandwidth is the capacity of information that can be carried at one time and how fast. The more the bandwidth, the faster and the more results you will get. But, if multiple devices are connected and there’s not enough bandwidth, there is a possibility that your internet will be slow. You can solve this problem by either increasing your bandwidth or reducing the number of electronic devices connected to the internet.

Some service providers like Wave Internet offer amazing bandwidth and speedy internet at great affordable rates.

What is Wi-Fi?

Remember the part where we said you can connect to the router wirelessly with the use of a password, well that’s where Wi-Fi technology comes in. Phones and tablets don’t have ethernet cable ports, so they require a wireless connection. This means you can exchange information with the router, just without the wires. How does it work?

It works the same way as broadband with the difference of being physically connected to the router. The information is exchanged through radio wave frequencies. Two radio wave frequencies are used: 2.4 gigahertz and 5 gigahertz. The higher the frequency, the amount of data transferred per second is greater. Sometimes, when you go into a room, your internet starts to become slower. The reason for this is that radio waves have difficulty crossing the walls and reaching your phone. It may also be disrupted by other electronic devices.

Sometimes, the issue with slow internet can be solved easily by turning off and on the router, in case there is any disturbance or blockage.

What is the difference between the two?

So, now that we know the basics, we can check the difference. Broadband is the connection between you and the internet and Wi-Fi is the technology that helps your devices to connect wirelessly to the internet. It should be mentioned here that you can be connected to the Wi-Fi but not get any internet signals. This means that there is a blockage or some issue with the wiring. You need Wi-Fi to connect to the broadband, but not necessarily. If there is an issue with the broadband, then for that you will need to call in an expert. Usually, there aren’t any major issues so the possibility of having issues with Wi-Fi is more than the possibility of having issues with broadband.

Now that you have learned the difference between Wi-Fi and broadband, it will be easier to understand where the issue could lie if you ever face slow internet. However, if you have a good internet service provider, you might not even have to worry about that as the issue can be solved instantly.
